Statistics Day celebrated in Chandigarh and Mohali


In recognition of the notable contributions made by Professor P. C. Mahalanobis in the field of economics, planning and development of statistics, Regional Office, National Statistical Office Chandigarh celebrated the “Statistics Day” to commemorate his birthday today at Chandigarh. The theme for Statistics Day-2019 is “Sustainable Development Goals”.

Presiding over the function, Viney Kumar, Deputy Director, NSO (FOD), RO Chandigarh presented an overview on the need and importance of the activities being undertaken in connection with Statistics Day.

Chief Guest, Dr. T.C. Goyal, former Professor of Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration, Punjab, Chandigarh emphasized on the importance of statistics.

The objective of this day is to create public awareness, especially among the younger generation for drawing inspiration from Professor P. C. Mahalanobis about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

To create awareness about NSO and its Surveys/Schemes among the participants Audio/Visual clips were displayed.

The function was attended by 50 Officers, Officials and university students engaged in the field of Statistics. Gaurav Singh, Assistant Director, NSO (FOD), RO Chandigarh also gave details of contributions of Prof. P.C.Mahalanobis in Indian Statistical System.

Similar functions were also held in all Sub-Regional Offices of RO Chandigarh and RO Mohali, Punjab. Jurisdiction of NSO, RO Chandigarh is UT Chandigarh and State of Haryana while RO Mohali, NSO (FOD) cover parts of Punjab. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by A.K. Medhi, SSO, NSO (FOD), RO Chandigarh.
