Kabul: A explosion took place near the US Embassy in Afghanistan’s Kabul on Wednesday, the anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the United States. However, no casualties or injuries were reported and the officials at the compound declared all-clear after the blast. The explosion was caused by a rocket. Following the explosion, a plume of smoke rose over central Kabul.

No official statement has been issued by Afghan officials over the incident so far. The NATO mission, which is nearby, said no personnel had been injured. Though no group has claimed the responsibility for the blast, it was the first major attack in the Afghan capital since US President Donald Trump abruptly called off peace talks with the Taliban.

The US President on Saturday called off peace negotiations with the Taliban over Kabul car bombing which killed 12 people, including an American soldier. He also cancelled a "secret meeting" with the group's representatives at Camp David in the wake of an attack that was carried out by the Taliban on August 7.

"Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday. They were coming to the United States tonight," he tweeted.

"Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to an attack in Kabul that killed one of our great-great soldiers, and 11 other people. I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations," Trump said in another tweet.

He further said that by carrying out the attack they didn’t strengthen their bargaining position but only made it worse, adding, “For how many more decades are they willing to fight?”

Following Trump’s decision, the Taliban warned that the lives of more Americans will be lost.

“This will lead to more losses to the US... Its credibility will be affected, its anti-peace stance will be exposed to the world, losses to lives and assets will increase,” the terror group said in a statement. It further said that the US President’s decision is unbelievable, and damaged his credibility.
